MOIRÉ DIMENSION

#2022 #INSTALLATION #PROJECTION MAPPING #Interdimensional Space

︎

Moiré Dimension presents a hetero space where images don't display as it is in an original way by building a projection mapping installation. Exploiting a type of graphic interference that is usually avoided in the industry, the project will take you through a visual journey of optical illusion.

Moiré Dimension 通过构建投影映射装置,呈现了一个异质空间,其中图像不会以原始方式显示。 利用行业中通常避免的一种图形干扰,该项目将带您完成视错觉的视觉旅程。

/Concept and Background Research

In the realm of visual perception, we often rely on our senses to interpret the world around us. However, certain phenomena challenge our cognition and prompt us to question the nature of what we perceive. Moiré patterns, which appear in various contexts such as printing and digital photography, exemplify this notion. Characterized by high-density points and lines, these patterns can distort image displays, resulting in unique visual effects that captivate the viewer. The transformative power of Moiré patterns, which can seemingly break the surface of an object, is reminiscent of the process by which complex structures emerge from simple atomic building blocks. In the fashion industry, these patterns are often utilized in runway garments, yielding unpredictable and dynamic visual experiences as the fabrics bend and move. Moiré patterns also have the potential to evoke cosmic imagery, drawing parallels between the formation of complex celestial structures from simpler elements. Artist Olafur Eliasson exemplifies this concept in his work, using concentric circles and overlaying shadows to create mesmerizing Moiré effects.
This project aims to explore the multidimensionality of visual space by examining the interplay between low-dimension patterns and the light and shadow effects they produce. As our brains process these images, they appear to possess spatiality, constantly shifting between dimensions and altering the perception of space. This exploration invites viewers to challenge their assumptions about the nature of reality and consider the possibility that appearances may be deceiving. By harnessing the power of Moiré patterns and manipulating the visual space, this artwork encourages a bold reimagining of perception, where our senses can be tricked into creating alternative realities. Through this exploration, the project invites viewers to question the limits of their perception and consider the complex interplay between simplicity and complexity in the visual world.

/Technical Implementationion

I'm fascinated with complex graphics, but I am a minimalist, so I am always seeking art generated by the unknown. In this project, I make a simple seed and see it grow in the influence of the physics of light. I tried to use irregular shapes to carry the projection aiming to build an abnormal space. I created a couple of scenes by using openFrameworks with C++ language and composited them together by ofxPiMapper. These scenes basically combine circles, lines and dots and each of them is composed of different arrangements and dynamics. They apply different principles of the formation such as relative movement and rotation. The overlap of each basic element and natural waves brought by Perlin noise emerge an unpredictable image.
